MANitoba Schools Science Symposium
The Manitoba Schools Science Symposium is the largest science fair in Manitoba, with over 550 students from across the province participating each year. The competition is held in April at the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus, and is open to students in Grades 4 to 12.
The MNN is proud to support our future neuroscientists by offering awards for the best neuroscience-themed projects. The awards consist of a cash prize and certificate, and are awarded in each of the following categories:
Elementary (Grades 4-6)
Junior (Grades 7 and 8)
Intermediate (Grades 9 and 10)
Are you interested in doing a neuroscience project for MSSS?
Many MNN neuroscientists welcome elementary and high school students into their labs! Find out how below.
Francophone Community Outreach
Manitoba Neuroscience Network member, Dr. Jean-Éric Ghia, has an ongoing partnership with Ici-Radio Canada Première to create 6-8 minute radio segments that highlight biomedical research conducted in Manitoba. The purpose of these segments is to engage with the large francophone population in Manitoba.
“Des éprouvettes et des hommes” airs on Tuesdays at 7:45 am on the Ici-Radio Canada morning show Le 6 a 9. All scopes of research are covered but several neuroscience-themed topics have been featured previously.
West Broadway Youth Outreach
In 2015 MNN partnered with West Broadway Youth Outreach, an organization that provides academic and social support to children in Winnipeg’s inner city. Many children in the West Broadway neighborhood are recent immigrants, and others come from disadvantaged backgrounds. WBYO rewards academic achievements through various programs such as the Dreams Mentorship program, which gives students the opportunity to meet someone who is working in the student’s “dream” job. Through the Dreams Mentorship program a a 10-year old boy named Kenna who wants to become a neuroscientist. met with Dr. Eftekhar Eftekharpour. Thank you Dr. Eftekharpour for fulfilling Kenna’s dream of meeting a neuroscientist. We are looking forward to welcoming Kenna into one of our trainee programs in the future, should he wish to pursue a career in the neurosciences!
