Summary
The Hannila lab studies the role of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) in CNS gene expression and neurodegeneration in the aging brain. We are currently examining the ability of SLPI to suppress the expression of genes such as presenilin-1 and granulin, which are mutated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. We are also conducting studies in SLPI null mutant mice to determine how the absence of SLPI alters protein expression in the CNS and how these changes affect behaviour and brain morphology with aging.
